Actress Patricia Arquette and Rosetta Getty founded GiveLove together to help the people of Haiti.  GiveLove works to provide school children with access to compost toilets and helps communities learn how to compost human and organic waste and to recycle it into nutrient rich soil. Compost sanitation prevents the spread of dangerous diseases and improves public health.  Patricia shared:

“Every year, thousands of children die because of water borne diseases. The ongoing cholera epidemic has been catastrophic, we want people to know that we haven’t forgotten them and we haven’t forgotten Haiti.”

Last night celebrities turned out to show their support for GiveLove.  Among them: Neil Patrick Harris, David Arquette, Balthazar Getty, and Joaquin Phoenix.

AnnaLynne McCord showed up to the Artists for Peace Justice “A Ring to Educate a Child in Haiti” Launch Event in Beverly Hills last night with noticeably darker locks.

The actress, who is normally seen with California blonde hair tweeted to her fans that the dark hair was just temporary and she would be returning to her blonde hair soon enough;

Okay! I’m NOT leaving 902 and the hair is for a movie I’m shooting right now. I adore all of you!! Xxx

I think I prefer her blonde. The actress, who can be seen in shots below with Gerard Butler who was also at the event seemed to dress pretty casually for the benefit affair. I wonder what the protocol is with that? Most of the other actresses I have seen pictures of are in cocktail dresses but AnnaLynne showed up wearing jeans. I wonder if she felt underdressed once she arrived?

Petra Nemcova visited the devastated island nation of Haiti over the weekend. She has been working for almost a year to open the first of several school projects after last year’s devastating earthquake.
Nemcova’s Happy Heart Fund, along with its partner Fondatio ProDev, has completed the construction on the kindergarten second of “Ecole Nouvelle Zoranje”.

“This school demonstrates that Haiti has the capacity supported by strategic partnerships to develop and to bring opportunities, innovation and quality education to its children. It is so exciting to see these bright children to be empowered,” Nemcova said.

The model/chairwoman of Happy Hearts has been in Haiti in meetings with school administrators and the country’s president, Michel Martelly for the past several days. This was the newly elected president and first lady of Haiti since being inaugurated on May 14.

“Happy Hearts Fund provides a sustained response to natural disasters and will replicate its school rebuilding initiative bringing it to scale for the children of Haiti,” said Happy Hearts Fund Executive Director Phillip Caputo.

After being grazed by a bullet during the Haiti election last week, Wyclef Jean is finding the positive in the incident. During a performance at Haze over the weekend, he wrapped his hand in the Haitian flag and shared:

“It brought light to the fact that there was an election going on that day. I don’t think none of you all knew about an election in Haiti until everyone heard what happened to me.”

There have been a few rumors that it was in fact just flying glass that hit Wyclef’s hand, but he shared:

“It was definitely a graze,” he said. “The bullet didn’t go in or anything. There’s a lot to the story … The story is about the fact that we had an election and our party is in the lead. It’s a young party, trying to take over the country.”

“but it was more like shock and awe”. “They put in the anesthesia and stuff. The pain came after all that.”

Remember how people were saying that Japan was getting a lot fewer donations than Haiti did after its disastrous earthquake? Well, Sandra Bullock has stepped up: she’s donated $1 million to Japan Disaster Relief.

The Red Cross announces that this is the first major celebrity donation (although celebs could have donated anonymously).

Sandra’s donation and Lady Gaga’s efforts are the only celebrity fund raising efforts I’ve heard of: have you heard of others? Between the quake itself and the problems with radiation, this is devastating for Japan.

Do you think that there will be telethons, etc. to raise money for Japan? I read an article that said the aid amounts are way down compared to the Haiti relief efforts because Japan isn’t a third world country. ??? Actor and ’30 Seconds To Mars’ singer Jared Leto is planning to release a book of photographs he took during a trip to Haiti last month. Jared revealed that he has a special connection to Haiti after spending a year there when he was 12.

He shared with Kerrang! magazine:

“I’m very glad I decided to take this time and go. Although there was a lot of tragedy everywhere, I’m happy that I was able to reconnect with this beautiful place.

“There is a lot of work to be done. A lot of people are in need. The infrastructure is a disaster and the situation is dire, but the Haitian people are unstoppable. They have enormous challenges in front of them that sometimes must seem beyond repair, but their spirit is alive and well and they are looking toward a promising tomorrow. It’s an inspiration to witness…

Jared says that he was looking for a way he could help out and put his talents to good use. He documented the recovery efforts day and night:

“I was questioning in what way I could participate. I’m not a doctor or a nurse, nor a disaster relief expert or a professional volunteer, but I’m an artist. I shot and filmed day and night, and will put together a collection of the images to raise funds that will be spent directly without any bureaucratic waste.”

The book is expected to be released in March already – that’s a quick turnaround time. Good for him for doing what he can to give back to the country.

Jay-Z was on Howard Stern’s radio show this morning and chatted about the crazy, non-stop rumors that say Beyoncé is pregnant. The rapper shared:

“I really sit back and wonder when people are going to stop. The day that happens, I don’t think Newsday is going to know before my grandmother.”

On why he doesn’t discuss their personal life:

“Everyone knows I’m married, I just don’t discuss it because it’s a part of my life that I’d rather keep private.”

I do feel bad for celebrities who have to deal with the pregnancy rumors all the time. I remember Jennifer Aniston sharing that it will sort of take away their thunder when it does finally happen because people will be so numb from hearing that headline so often.

When Sean Penn isn’t working on a movie set, he’s in Haiti still trying to do his part to help the country recover after the devastating earthquake.  Some of the organizations that his JP Haitian Relief Organization was partnered with are wanting to pull out and focus on other areas rather than the massive tent cities, but he vows to beg them to stay on:

I don’t think there has even been a published or discussed exit strategy. If there is one, it would only live in my head,” In one mutation or another, this is going to be a several-decades-long organization, and it may develop into something entirely different over time.

“All of the partners have been good partners, and I don’t intend to give up on any of them, and, if they pull out, there will be scratch marks on their ankles so deep they won’t be able to walk out,” Penn said. “I am extremely reluctant to believe that once I have  some conversations with some of these partners that they will be leaving any time soon.”

“Rubble removal is the key thing. But obviously if something like what just happened with the cholera outbreak keeps happening, and this becomes a widespread outbreak, then we need to focus on that.  I would start with rubble removal, and then camp management is quite important. We would like to expand that and take on other camps because, as you know, most camps have no management.”

Sean says that managing the camps and distributing the aid has to be done “just so” to keep things running smoothly. The actor shows some of his frustration over the struggle to do just that:

All of these things have to be parallel, and when people separate, that means it is a confession that they aren’t doing their f–ing job, they don’t know what they’re doing, and they should get the f– out of Haiti.

I give Sean a lot of credit for sticking by Haiti and really doing the grunt work on the ground and not giving up after all this time.  It’s obvious that he’s in this for the long haul.
